Nutraceutical potential of Amazonian oilseeds in modulating the immune system against COVID-19 – A narrative review
Since the outbreak of COVID-19 disease, medical and scientific communities are facing a challenge to contain its spread, develop effective treatments, and reduce its sequelae. Together with the therapeutical treatments, the use of dietary bioactive compounds represents a promising and cost-effective strategy to modulate immunological responses. Amazonian oilseeds ...
Effect of guarana seed powder on cholesterol absorption in vitro and in Caco-2 cells
Cardiovascular disease risk is related to oxidative stress and hypercholesterolemia. Guarana seed powder contains flavanols that possess antioxidant properties and cholesterol-lowering effects. However, the molecular mechanism through which guarana seed powder may decrease cholesterol uptake ...
Industrial potential of Bacaba (Oenocarpus bacaba) in powder: antioxidant activity, spectroscopic and morphological behavior
The objective of this research was to analyze the industrial potential of a bacaba powder (Oenocarpus bacaba) obtained by different drying methods, evaluating antioxidant activity, spectroscopic and morphological behavior and addition to the composition of inorganic elements. The content of anthocyanins, flavonoids and carotenoids of each powder were determined as well as the total phenolic compounds. The structure of the granules of the powder were visualized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the elemental composition was attained by the X-ray spectroscopic energy ...
A review of the nutritional properties of different varieties and byproducts of peach palm (Bactris gasipaes) and their potential as functional foods
Bactris gasipaes Kunth belongs to the Arecaceae family and is known in various parts of the world under various names. This fruit presents several hybridizations and wild species containing diverse percentages of nutritional and functional constituents. These constituent properties link its parts, such as pulps, peels, and seeds rich in oils, with ...
Physicochemical properties and bioactive composition of the lyophilized Acmella oleracea powder
The aim of this study was to obtain and characterize a lyophilized leaf powder from Acmella oleracea (LPA) as a functional food ingredient. Sorption isotherms of LPA display a monolayer moisture content of 9.1 and 9.3 g H2O 100 g–1 for adsorption and desorption, respectively. The flavonoids, ...
Bioactive, technological-functional potential and morphological structures of passion fruit albedo (Passiflora edulis)
Agroindustrial disposal generates tons of passion fruit albedo during pulp and juice processing. The reduction of this environmental pollution potential and its use involves research such as this one, which aims to determine the bioactive compounds in the passion fruit albedo (Passiflora edulis), its technological, functional potential and its morphological structures, aiming at food application. The methodologies applied followed internationally accepted and recommended guidelines. The results showed that the albedo flour obtained a yield of 9.76%, and from this, ...
Physicochemical and morphological properties of the non-conventional Calathea allouia starch
Physicochemical and morphological properties of the isolated starch of Calathea allouia were determined. Starch (20.71 g/100 g wet basis, wb) was the major constituent of C. allouia tubers, followed by dietary fibers (3.38 g/100 g wb) and sugars (2.80 g/100 g wb), and potassium was the major mineral (95% of mineral fraction). The amylose content (27.85 g/100 g starch) found in the starch allows it to be classified as a normal amylose starch, which exhibited A-type diffraction and typical birefringence patterns. The starch granules ...
COMPARATIVE PARAMETERS OF PHYSICOCHEMICAL AND SPECTROSCOPIC PROPERTIES AND THE FATTY ACID PROFILE OF BRAZIL-NUT OIL (Bertholletiaexcelsa HBK) OF DIFFERENT HARVEST SEASONS
The objective of this research was to compare the physical-chemical, spectroscopic and fatty acid profiles of Brazil nut oils from the 2018 and 2019 harvests. The methodological procedures followed the internationally accepted standards of the American Oil Chemist’s Society. The analysis of the physical-chemical properties showed oils with high quality for human consumption, within the quality standards defined ...
Extraction of bacaba (Oenocarpus bacaba) oil with supercritical CO2: Global yield isotherms, fatty acid composition, functional quality, oxidative stability, spectroscopic profile and antioxidant activity
Quality parameters and thermogravimetric and oxidative profile of Muruci oil (Byrsonima crassifolia L.) obtained by supercritical CO2
These researches aimed determine the quality parameters, the nutritional profile, and the thermogravimetric and oxidative behavior of Muruci (Byrsonima crassifolia L.) oil obtained by supercritical CO2 extraction. The results showed an average oil yield of 5.50%. The acidity and peroxide values show good quality and conservation standards, according to the Brazilian legislation. The fatty acid profile indicates a predominance of unsaturated fatty acids with levels above 60%, highlighting the presence of fatty acids omega-6 and omega-9. The thermogravimetric ...
